People spend a good amount of time, money and energy to ensure that their landscaping looks attractive. Unfortunately, the plants that people enjoy are the same plants enjoyed by animals. Deer, for example, have become an increasingly difficult problem for many gardeners and property owners. It isn't hard to tell if deer have been making a meal of your site. Deer don't have upper incisors, so look for a ragged, squared, torn appearance at the end of browsed twigs.
Through the years, many home remedies have been rumored to alleviate this situation, all of which have resulted in continuous deer problems. From spraying hot sauce on plants, to hanging ultrasound "deer deterrents”, gardeners have tried everything! Although they may provide initial results, the deer are always cunning enough to overcome whatever obstacle they are given. What is a gardener or site manager to do, then? Fortunately, a solution has been found! Research has shown that Tree Guard is one of the most effective deer repellents available today.
WHAT is Deer Guard? Deer Guard is a pre-mixed, ready-to-use deer repellent that sprays on milky and dries clear. The active ingredient, bitter tasting Bitrex, is locked onto the plant surface forming a "protective jacket" which resists dew, snow, rain and vaporization. The result is an effective, long-lasting, repellent. Deer Guard may be used on any non-food plant, and poses minimal risk to deer, plants, people and the environment.
WHY does Deer Guard work? Deer Guard’s main ingredient, Bitrex, is the bitterest compound known to man (and deer!). It is inert and odorless, but only tiny amounts are needed to make products taste unpalatable.
Macfarlan Smith discovered denatonium
benzoate in 1958 and named it Bitrex. In Deer Guard, a unique latex polymer carries the Bitrex and holds it to the surface of the plant, resisting rain, and wash-off for up to 100 days. New plant growth will need to be protected as it develops. A detection agent is also incorporated, permitting deer to identify which plants have been treated, eliminating the need for deer to taste your plants to detect the Deer Guard.
HOW is Deer Guard used? Deer Guard is pre-mixed and ready to use from the container. One gallon protects 1,000 square feet of plant material. Note that two light coats provide better protective results than a single heavy application.
Wear gloves during application. Deer Guard must be completely dry in order to adhere properly during rain or snow, so be sure to allow time for drying.
Deer Guard, when applied, has a milky color, but will dry with a clear sheen.
